The ADS multigene family. A, Comprising nine members, the ADS family is the largest family of desaturase-like genes in the Arabidopsis genome. ADS1 and ADS2 have previously been identified by sequence homology to cyanobacterial acyl-lipid desaturases and mammalian acyl-CoA desaturases (Fukuchi-Mizutani et al., 1998). Boxes, ADS genes studied here; numbers denote approximate chromosomal location in mega base pairs. B, ADS cDNA sequences were clustered using ClustalW (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/clustalw/), and a phylogram was created using PHYLIP (http://evolution.genetics.washington.edu/phylip.html).
