The difference in steps (top) and steps tracking (bottom) before and after edge creation as a function of edge number (x-axis) and edge type and initiator (subplots). Steps tracking difference refers to the difference in probably of recording steps on a given day of the week after edge creation compared to the week before. Dashed lines show corresponding baselines (main text). We observe significant activity increases after edges get created. The effect is larger for friend edges compared to follow edges and larger for edge senders compared to receivers.
