Column (a) presents the results of comparing the mean ratings from Study 1 against an intermediate value of 5. Positive values of t and g indicate a ‘male’ genre, whereas negative values indicate a ‘female’ genre. Column (b) presents the results of comparing the mean preference ratings from Study 2 against an intermediate value of 5. Positive values of t and g indicate a popular genre, whereas negative values indicate an unpopular genre. Column (c) presents the results of comparing the preference ratings of male and female participants observed in Study 2. Positive values of t and g indicate a stronger male preference, whereas negative values indicate a stronger female preference. The significance criterion was set to 0.003 for each test using Bonferroni’s method for multiple comparisons. The degrees of freedom were corrected in column (c) if Levene’s test revealed a significant inequality of variances. Hedges’s g is given as an estimate of effect sizes (cf. Fritz et al., 2012).
