Replication of directed remembering in visual working memory. In conditions 1 and 2, participants try to remember 1 or 2 objects, respectively. In condition 2′, the participant tries to remember 2 objects at first, but early in the retention interval is cued as to which object will later be tested. Participants use the cue to their advantage, redirecting maintenance to the to-be-tested object. Chance performance is 1/12. Error bars show the across-subject SEM.
