The most commonly used preclinical models to study the in vivo activity of compounds against M. abscessus. The methods of infection, the drug treatment conditions and the assays used to monitor drug activity of anti-Mabs molecules in drosophila, zebrafish embryos and immunocompromised mice are illustrated. The advantages and limitations of each model, from the early stages of drug screening to assessments of the preclinical efficacy of the more advanced compounds are also indicated.
