Communication pathways between the basal ganglia and the cerebral cortex are shown in blue on the right of the schematic. (C) The subthalamic nucleus has direct connections to the cerebral cortex as well as indirect connections to the cerebral cortex via thalamus and the globus pallidus (GP).
