Assimilation of MetSO enantiomers by E. coli mutants. Strains were grown overnight in LB, spun down, washed, and used for inoculating M9-based minimal medium containing glucose and increasing concentrations of Met (top panel), Met-S-SO (middle panel), or Met-R-SO (lower panel). The optical density at 600 nm was recorded after 24 h of growth at 37°C. The strains analyzed were LCB303 (metB₁), BE54 (metB₁ msrA msrB), JB08 (metB₁ msrA msrB bisC), BE72 (metB₁ msrA msrB mobAB), and JB11 (metB₁ trxA).
