A. Cleavage reaction progress in the presence of Mg2+ (filled circles) and Mn2+ (open squares) ions. The data have been fitted to exponential functions. Supplementary Figure 12 shows an example of the separation of substrate and product by gel electrophoresis at various times in the presence of Mg2+ ions.

B. A plot of the logarithm of the cleavage rate (taken from Supplementary Table 3) as a function of the pKa values for the divalent metal ions present in the reaction 57. These data have been fitted to a straight line (gradient = -1.26, R = 0.965). Three (Mn2+and Ca2+) or four (Mg2+ and Sr2+) independent measurements were made, and the error bars show twice the standard deviation.
