ars activity of intergenes is a function of length and AT content. Intergenes (green dots) and genes (red dots) are shown as in Fig. 1. Two series of randomly chosen intergenes (green squares) and genes (red squares) were tested for ars activity in the standard assay as follows: (i) intergenes or genes with similar lengths (1,090–1,092 bp) but different AT contents (vertical line), and (ii) intergenes with similar AT contents (73%) but different lengths (horizontal line).
