Schematic diagram of activatable CPPs. Cellular uptake induced by a cationic peptide is blocked by a short stretch of acidic residues attached by a cleavable linker. Once the linker is cleaved, the acidic inhibitory domain drifts away, and the cationic CPP is free to carry its cargo into cells.
