Children with acute malaria (n = 274) were grouped based on SMA (defined as Hb < 6.0 g/dL, with any density parasitemia) [25]. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were determined using bivariate logistic regression controlling for age, gender, co-infections (HIV-1 and bacteremia) sickle cell trait (HbAS), alpha-thalassemia and G6PD deficiency.
