Molecular mechanisms allowing segregated expression of the dendritic Kv4.2 and Kv2.1 channels. (A) Sorting and trafficking of Kv4.2 and Kv2.1 channels. Association of Kv4.2 channel with auxiliary protein K+ channel Interacting Protein (KChIP) targets the channel to the cell surface. Kif17 ensures microtubule-based transport whereas myosin Va is used for actin-based transport of Kv4.2 channel on proximal dendrites and spines. Myosin IIb transports Kv2.1 to the somatodendritic compartment. (B) Intrinsic motifs, posttranslational regulations and binding partners regulating Kv4.2 surface expression.
