Graphical model of SS-induced frequency-dependent hyperactivity. (A) Normalized amplitudes of neural activity in auditory cortex produced by suprathreshold neurons with low, mid and high CFs pre-treatment. (B) SS induces multi-level in-band amplification of sound evoked activity in low, mid and high CF neurons at multiple level from the cochlear nucleus to auditory cortex resulting in hyperactivity across all frequency bands in auditory cortex. The CF upshifts of low CF neurons and CF downshift of high CF neurons preferentially enhances sound-evoked activity in the mid-frequency region.
