Table 3.

Activities of antioxidant enzymes in rat pups

Groups
(n = 4)
Glutathione reductase
(GR mU/mg of protein)
Thioltransferase
(Ttase mU/mg of protein)
Control 0.77 ± 0.16 2.0 ± 0.28
NACA 0.92 ± 0.063 1.8 ± 0.20
Na2SeO3 1.3 ± 0.23* 1.2 ± 0.19*
NACA + Na2SeO3 0.88 ± 0.16# 1.8 ± 0.35

Activities of glutathione reductase and thioltransferase from the lenses of each group. NACA treatment in the NACA + Na2SeO3 group significantly decreased the glutathione reductase activity when compared to the glutathione reductase activity of Na2SeO3 group lenses. Although NACA increased the thioltransferase activity in NACA + Na2SeO3 group, it was not significantly higher when compared to the Na2SeO3 group. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way analysis of variance, followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison tests. *p < 0.05 compared to the control group and # p < 0.05 compared to the Na2SeO3 group. Values are reported as mean (n = 4) ± S.E.
