The mature part of the embryo now forms a repetitive pattern by a R-D mechanism, but forcing from the oscillator in the posterior growth zone yields the same pattern as before the transition. Thus, the “mutant” embryo may survive this transition to another pattern-forming mechanism, which may then be exploited by evolution as a basis for a simultaneous all-or-none stripe mechanism.
