Expression of protein markers in the CRC microenvironment of normal and neoplastic tissue defined as having an activated or a quiescent immune phenotype. The classification is based on a combined expression score of STAT1, IRF-1 and IRF-5 (rows 1–3). Two cases are shown throughout. The normal colonic tissue control of the case with an activated immune phenotype is shown. Immunoactive cases are characterized by a significantly increased infiltration of activated CD8+ CTL (row 4) showing expression of perforin and granzyme B effector molecules (rows 5–6).
