Schematic representation of the conversion of Heme into Bilirubin. Heme is catabolised into biliverdin by the enzyme Heme Oxygenase, releasing carbon monoxide (CO) and free iron (Fe2+). Biliverdin is further reduced by Biliverdin Reductase into unconjugated bilirubin. Both enzymes depend on nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) as reducing agent.
