Contrasting brain activity in mothers and non-mothers: Mothers demonstrated greater reactivity to vocalisations from infants and adults across a range of cortical regions implicated in the processing of affective auditory cues. These regions included areas involved in executive functions and higher order cognitive functions (middle frontal gyrus; MFG; precuneus)56, interpretation of vocal content (middle temporal gyrus, MTG), affective processing (orbitofrontal cortex, OFC) and preparatory motor responses (supplementary motor area, SMA).
