The non-steroidal receptors are retained in the nucleus regardless of the ligand binding status and bind as heterodimers (usually with RXR) to HREs and complex with co-repressor proteins. Ligand binding to the nuclear receptor causes dissociation of co-repressor and recruitment of co-activator proteins.
