Depiction of mitochondrial ribosomal protein (MRP) import and synthesis of mitochondrial (mt) proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) enriched in the high feed efficiency pedigree male broiler phenotype. MRPs are synthesized in the nucleus and imported into the mitochondria through outer mitochondrial membrane transport (TOMM) proteins and inner mitochondrial mitochondrial membrane proteins (TIMM). Once inside the mitochondria, mt transfer RNAs (mt-tRNA) encoded by mtDNA facilitate protein translation that takes place on the mitochondrial 39S and 28S ribosomal subunits. Pink or red color denotes processes that were enriched in the high feed efficiency pedigree broiler male as indicated in Table 3 (See text for more details).
