A visual depiction of the sequence of events in the Choice Reaction Time task (CRT). On each non-target (NT) trial, participants observed a series of black shapes while awaiting the presentation of a target trial portraying coloured shapes (i.e., the “response period”). On each target trial, participants were to indicate (via a button press) whether the target item, which was presented in the center of the screen, was presented on the left or the right side of the screen. In the example provided here, because the target item was a circle, a correct response would entail indicating that the circle was presented on the right side of the screen.
