Pravastatin protected intestinal crypt stem cells (hematoxylin and eosin staining; original magnification, ×40). (A) Jejunum tissue from a control mouse that was irradiated with no drug administration. Most intestinal crypts were destroyed and lost their shape. (B) Jejunum tissue from a mouse that received pravastatin 24 and 4 h prior to irradiation. More viable crypts were present, as compared with the control group. (C) Pravastatin administration increased the number of viable intestinal crypts in all of the assessed intestinal regions. This difference was statistically significant in the ileum (P<0.0001).
