Regions in which the effects of age on neural recruitment differed significantly as a function of memory phase (i.e., age-by-phase interaction) at p < 0.005 with a 29 voxel extent are presented in purple. Regions in which age is associated with both significant decreases in recruitment during search and significant increases in recruitment during elaboration (i.e., a conjunction of p < 0.005 with a 29 voxel extent for both contrasts) are presented in cyan. The elaboration time course of these three ROIs (a: −32, −82, 26; b: −8, −60, 0; c: −18, −60, 10) are presented for the 12 youngest and 12 oldest adults in the sample.
