During the starvation phase (marked by the gray-shaded area), the growth is halted. The time series of the three strains were aligned such that the onset of starvation coincides. The three strains were introduced to the medium at different times, as indicated by the colored arrows. The lines and symbols represent averages and the colored bands represent mean ± SE (n = 3). The growth rate was computed using a Savitzky-Golay filter applied to the experimental measurements of the optical density (OD) over the course of the experiment.
