Proposed mechanisms of Mn-terpy oligomer/WO3 catalytic system in water oxidation. Black arrows indicate the proton transfer reaction; blue arrows represent the electron transfer steps. Mn-terpy oligomer oxidizes H2O oxidation by receiving photogenerated holes from WO3 and undergoing a catalytic cycle, in which Mn valance change is a proton-coupled electron transfer in a similar way to PS II oxygen-evolving complex.
