Differentiation of T cells in spleen. CD4+ (a) and CD8+ (b) T cells in spleen were analyzed for differentiation. Gating strategy is shown in Additional file 5: Figure S5A. T cell differentiation was defined as follows: naïve (N) = CD45RO-CCR7+, memory (M) = CD45RO+, terminal effector (TE) CD45RO-CCR7-, central memory (CM) = CD45RO + CCR7+, transitional memory (TM) = CD45RO + CCR7-CD27+, effector memory (EM) = CD45RO + CCR7-CD27-.
