In keratoconic button 1 cornea (A), the TEM image shows the first ∼10 μm of stroma and reveals no MBs in the stroma (arrow) above Descemet's membrane. Conversely, in the same region of normal cornea (B), an abundance of electron dense MBs are visible in the first ∼8 μm of stroma above DM.
