A loom used by Maonan weavers in Huanjiang county, Guangxi province, China. One of the most complex looms in our study, it incorporates a ‘programmed’ textile pattern, saved in the form of bamboo rods embedded in cords around a bamboo drum (near to the weaver and just above her head). It is used to weave bedcovers such as the one shown to the right of the loom, which consists of two woven strips sewn together. The detail at the far right shows part of the repeating motifs in silk supplementary weft on an indigo cotton ground, each repeat corresponding to one rotation of the pattern drum.
