Intracellular survival of stationary phase B. pseudomallei in J774A.1 macrophages. Macrophage cells were infected with 1 × 10⁷ c.f.u. ml^− 1 bacteria for 30 min, followed by incubation with 1 mg kanamycin ml^− 1 for 1 h to kill any extracellular bacteria. The cells were maintained in the presence of 250 μg kanamycin ml^− 1 and periodically lysed in order to enumerate the number of intracellular bacteria.
