A model depicting critical roles for bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP1)/tolloid like 1 (TLL1) in formation and maintenance of periodontium. Here we propose that the closely related proteinases BMP1/TLL1 are required for maintaining matrix homeostasis in periodontium.
