RSV CA variants generated through proteolytic cleavage of the Gag polyprotein. The figure shows the amino acid sequence of the RSV Gag polyprotein (strain Prague C) at the capsid-nucleocapsid junction with the major proteolytic cleavage sites indicated. During maturation, initial cleavage at M488 leads to the transient buildup of the species denoted CA + 12 (CA-SP)92. Subsequent proteolytic processing of the spacer peptide yields the species denoted CA and CA + 3, which are found in approximately 2:1 ratio in mature RSV virions91.
