Virulent LCMV inhibits reporter protein activity. p4×HRE-βGAL was transfected into HepG2 cells as described in Materials and Methods. Plasmids pGL-3 and pGFP were cotransfected to control for β-Gal activity and transfection success, respectively. Twenty-four hours after transfection, the cells were infected with LCMV-ARM or LCMV-WE for 24, 48, or 72 h. The cells were harvested, and β-Gal activity was measured spectrophotometrically. Each bar represents the mean value + the standard deviation of triplicate measurements from two independent experiments.
