Donor H had copious amounts of PE wear debris in soft tissue as seen by comparison of light microscopy (A, C) and polarized light microscopy (B, D, arrows). Possible foreign body giant cells can be seen in C (horizontal arrows), coinciding in location with debris in D. Diffuse cytoplasmic birefringence indicative of submicron PE debris [10, 25, 26] was observed (B,D), however, large, shard-like particles encased in fibrous tissue measuring over 4mm in length were also seen.
