B. pseudomallei capsule and LPS expression is elevated in the presence of 30% normal human serum. B. pseudomallei lux reporter strains SZ211 (A) and SZ213 (B) were grown in M9 plus 1% glucose, in M9 plus 1% glucose plus 30% NHS, or in M9 plus 1% glucose plus 30% HI-NHS. Absorbance (OD₅₄₀) and luminescence (in relative light units [rlu]) were measured at each time point. Capsule (SZ211) and LPS (SZ213) expression was determined by normalizing light production for growth (rlu/OD₅₄₀) of each strain. The data represent the average amount of lux reporter activity normalized for growth and standard deviation from three separate experiments.
