Electron micrographs of mouse Bruch's membrane of 9-month-old Efemp1+/+ (+/+), Efemp1ki/ki (ki/ki), and Efemp1−/− (−/−) mice treated with nitrous acid and stained by CB. Note that filaments representing HSPGs in the basement membranes of the RPE and the endothelium of choriocapillaris were eliminated, but that filaments (arrowheads) representing C/DSPGs in the fibrous layers of Bruch's membrane were preserved.
