Prolate spheroid (A) formed at end of silica fiber after splicing to single mode fiber. After polishing (B), total internal reflection directs light emitted from the SMF core to a transverse focal spot. Controlling the radii of curvature of the spheroid permits compensation for the astigmatism arising from the catheter sheath inside which this fiber will be inserted.
