Reduced CD8+ T lymphocytosis in PMPA-treated SIV-infected macaques. The levels of CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood (A) and the gastrointestinal mucosa (B and C) were determined prior to SIV infection and monitored in treated and untreated macaques at the indicated time points by flow cytometry (A and B) and by immunohistochemistry (C) at 26 weeks p.i. Direct counting revealed an increase in CD8+ T cells in GALT in untreated SIV-infected animals (C, panel a) compared to SIV-infected macaques undergoing ART (b) and healthy uninfected controls (c). An increase in goblet cells was also observed in PMPA-treated SIV-infected animals (b).
