Illustrative case in group B (no attempt at cochlear nerve preservation at surgery). A 67-year-old woman presented with loss of hearing (Gardner–Robertson class 5) and gait problems. The T1-weighted gadolinium-enhanced MR axial images showed very large VS with significant brainstem compression, with a preoperative tumor volume of 24 cm3. The tumor volume was reduced to 2.4 cm3 (i.e., 10% of the preoperative volume) at the time of GKRS. The facial nerve function remained normal (House–Brackmann I)
