Burn serum enhances bacterial adherence to human fibronectin and fibrinogen. S. aureus Newman and ATCC25923 overnight cultures were subjected to the same growth conditions as described for Figure 4, and were centrifuged and resuspended in PBS. Bacterial suspensions were then added to wells coated with fibronectin and fibrinogen. Adherent cells were stained with crystal violet and the absorbance of the extracted dye was determined at 590 nm. Values represent results from three independent experiments. P < 0.05, ∗∗P < 0.01, and ∗∗∗P < 0.001 indicate differences are significant between burn serum-treated strains and those treated otherwise.
