Activating chloramphenicol production using TB- and Sv-MtrA expression constructs. (Top) Modeling S. venezuelae MtrA (Sv-MtrA) on the published Mycobacterium tuberculosis MtrA (TB-MtrA) structure (Friedland et al., 2007) suggests they are likely to be highly similar. (Bottom) Expression of TB-MtrA and the gain of function Y102C TB-MtrA proteins in wild-type S. venezuelae NRRL B-65442 switches on high level production of chloramphenicol. The equivalent Y99C change in Sv-MtrA has a smaller effect on chloramphenicol production.
