Each subject could fulfill one or several of the preset A, B, C, or D asthma criteria: (A) report of physician-diagnosed asthma or ever having had asthma; (B) wheeze with breathlessness without having a cold in the past 12 months (asthmatic wheeze) in combination with at least one of: (1) attacks of shortness of breath (SOB) or wheeze in the past 12 months caused by at least three different triggering factors, or (2) asthma medication use in the past 12 months; (C) attacks of SOB or any wheeze in the past 12 months in combination with FEV₁ reversibility of both ≥ 12% and ≥ 200 ml; and (D) attacks of SOB or any wheeze in the past 12 months in combination with positive methacholine challenge.
