Design strategy for three distinct uridine-based azo nucleodyes. Uracil replaces one of the phenyl rings in the archetypal azobenzene core, and a donor–acceptor relationship is introduced between a substituent on the phenyl ring and one of the heteroatoms of the nucleobase. R = ribofuranose or 2′-dexoyribofuranose.
