Encircling green arrows represent the processes involved in joint maintenance and adaptation. The red arrow represents inflammatory perturbations as induced by sterile (mechanical stimulation) and/or non-sterile (bacteria) and other systemic diseases related to metabolic syndromes (diabetes/hypertension) that invariably induce acerbated mechanobiological adaptation by altering the joint structure. The gray arrow represents physiologic and pathologic perturbations that induce strain-mediated adaptation through altered tooth movement in the alveolar socket and plausible impaired joint function.
