The Additivity Index reveals that the persistence of the multisensory integration deficit induced by noise-rearing is reversed by cross-modal (VA) training. This index uses the sum of the comparator unisensory responses as a benchmark with which to evaluate multisensory integration. Note the difference between the normal scatter plot (A) (each point represents a single neuron) and those after noise-rearing (B), and after 6 and 12 months of housing in a normal environment (C,D). Only after cross-modal training does the scatter plot approximate that seen in the normal animal (E).
