Lipid treatment thresholds and dietary therapies for dyslipidemia in obese children

Lipid Thresholds:
  • Total Cholesterol > 200 mg/dl

  • LDL Cholesterol > 130 mg/dlab

  • Triglycerides > 150 mg/dl

  • HDL < 35 HDL

Dietary Strategies
  • Reduce Total Fat Intake to <25% of Total Calories

  • Reduce Saturated Fat Intake to <7% of Total Calories

  • Eliminate Trans fats (<1% of Total Calories)

  • Increase Soluble Fiber: Dose of 5–20 grams per day

  • Initiate Omega-3 fatty acids (1–2 grams per day)

  • Use products containing plant stanols or sterols

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus should first have glycemic control maximized.
