Reduced Essentiality among Genes Involved in Direct Interactions with the Host

Phenotype distributions for secreted and surface proteins of the invasive merozoite and for proteins exported from the asexual intraerythrocytic parasite are shown as pie charts using the same colors as in Figure 2. Gene numbers in each category are next to violin plots showing RGR. Enrichment in dispensable genes is significant for bir (p < 0.02), fam, and “other exported” (both p < 0.01).
