The AIEC numbers in the luminal (log c.f.u. per ml suspension) (a) and mucosal environment (log c.f.u. per g mucin agar) (b) of five ascending colon compartments. The first unit consisted of the conventional setup that only contains luminal microbes (L-SHIME) (1), whereas the other four units were modified by incorporating a mucosal compartment (=M-SHIME). The L-SHIME and the first M-SHIME were fed the normal nutritional SHIME medium (2a), while the other three were treated with L. reuteri 1063 (2b), LC-AX (2c) and IN (2d), respectively. AIEC was inoculated on day 22, 23, 24 and 25 at ~2.10⁸ c.f.u. per ml. Samples were collected before renewal of mucus on day 24, 27, 29 and 31.
