The ancestral variant (L) has experienced multiple substitutions, which are scattered throughout the phylogeny. However, the two parallel L→F substitutions occur in closely related species; the same is true for the three parallel L→V substitutions. Phylogenetic distances are in numbers of amino acid substitutions per site. The branches indicated with the blue waves are shortened by 1.2 distance units.
