Chemical structure of B. pseudomallei and B. mallei LPS antigens. Smooth LPS species consist of three major domains: the lipid A, the core, and the OAg repeat. The OAg is a linear heteropolymer featuring a disaccharide unit in an equimolar ratio of (1→3)-linked 6-deoxy-α-l-talopyranose and β-d-glucopyranose. Five internal (intrachain) and two terminal (non-reducing) disaccharide residues are present within the OAg. According to the species, they show different methylation and acetylation substitution patterns at the C2, C3, and C4 positions of the 6-deoxy-l-talose residue45
