The leftmost column of spots on each picture is derived from colonies of the ancestor strain plated on non-selective medium. The other spots are derived from colonies that appeared on day 2 (left picture) or on days 4–5 (right picture) after plating. One colony was picked from every replicate plate on which at least one colony had appeared in the respective time interval. White asterisks indicate spots with CFP fluorescence intensity greater than 6 standard deviations above the mean fluorescence intensity of all ancestor spots.
